In 1862 William T. Matson penned the following text, which is a prayer that is often sung to the wonderful Tallis Cannon. We should pray that our heart’s desire would be to listen, love, and abide in the word of truth, for that is abiding in Christ. Notice, however, that this prayer asks for an obedient mind, which is not our normal request (to put it lightly). That word, obedience, has fallen on hard ground as of late. It’s seen as oppressive and legalistic. And yet, if our delight is to follow, there is nothing legalistic about it.
I love this text set to the Tallis Cannon. Often, the text to the doxology is sung to close the hymn. And, if you just sing the melody, you can sing it in a round. The second, third, and fourth person each begin after the prior person sings, “Praise God from whom all blessings flow.” Very fun!
Teach me, O Lord, thy holy way, and give me an obedient mind,
That in thy service I may find my soul’s delight from day to day.
Help me, O Savior, here to trace the sacred footsteps thou hast trod;
And, meekly, walking with my God, to grow in goodness, truth, and grace.
