Together

This past weekend was a gift. It was one of making music together, eating together, and worshipping together. I believe the process of creating, sharing a meal, and giving thanks to God is part of the gift of iron sharpening iron and helps us be more Christlike in our relationships.

All this happened both with the musicians at Christ Covenant and for me personally. It was a great joy to host Henry Haffner and Frank Auer in our home. Even with all the rehearsal time we were able to enjoy copious amounts of food and laughter. These guys are great.

My goal for the weekend was to remind us that we exalt Christ by striving for excellence, by being shaped by his Spirit in worship, and by taking joy in passing the baton to the next generation. I believe this happened in profound ways. I lost track of how many people (both musicians and others) mentioned how life-giving it was to think about creating something beautiful, while at the same time knowing this was about something bigger: becoming more like Christ and investing faithfully in the next generation.

Further, over 125 musicians gathered to sing, play, and worship. It was hard work! But great fun. The string section (15 strong!) worked hard in the keys of Eb and Ab (not easy for young players). The brass ended with smiles on their faces even though their chops were sore. The choirs were simply joyful and sounded wonderful – including our 3-7 grade choir. What a joy it was to hear the children’s voices lifted up on Sunday morning.

So many hands made this kickoff a great success. This morning (though I’m tired and this post is a day late), my heart is full of thankfulness. —Nathan

  1. We enjoyed You Reign and your testimony about it all. Glad the weekend went so well and was so fulfilling and that everyone who worked with you felt the same. You must be more encouraged than you can put in words.
